How The Heck To Stay Motivated

Do you feel like sometimes you are just SO motivated and other times you can’t seem to find an ounce of motivation? I’m here to tell you that it is completely normal! Did you know there are two types of motivation and each type can have an effect on an individuals behavior, along with reaching goals!

Intrinsic motivation is basically motivation within. This would be performing an activity because you enjoy it.

Extrinsic motivation is external motivation such as rewards.

Some people are more motivated intrinsically OR extrinsically while others can be both! Learning how you’re motivated can assist in pushing through hard days and staying consistent. After years of consistency I still have less motivated days! Let me tell you, sometimes I’d rather sit my booty on my couch and binge watch Netflix!(Wait I’m a mom of 3, I can’t really do that peacefully anyways😂)

It’s what you do in moments like this though, that make a real difference in consistency and progress!

Here’s some general tips that can be helpful for motivation on those couch potato feeling days:

  1. Commit to 5-10 minutes of movement! More often than not, you’ll find that those 5-10 minutes are all you need to jump start your session. If you happen to find after those few minutes that you still can’t push forward, it can be a sign your body needs rest and I always urge my clients to honor that! Honor your body! It’s perfectly okay if you need extra rest some weeks.

  2. Music!🎶 Playing good music that pumps you up can light up your workout(& your day). For home workouts I recommend investing in an Amazon Alexa which are about $40. If you have exercise at the gym, there are numerous reliable headphones you can purchase for the same price or less.

  3. Reward yourself! Small rewards can be as simple as buying a new outfit, taking a day trip, self care, enjoying your favorite meal/treat, etc.

  4. Review & reset! Review your goals and progress while continuing to set new goals. New personal records, more reps, higher weight, improvement in endurance, etc. These do not always have to be strictly composition goals!

  5. Surround yourself with like minded positive individuals! Having others supporting you and your goals is absolutely amazing. Workout buddies can also be super motivating and helps with accountability.

Stay sustained out there! 💪🏼
